Buying your own coverage shouldn’t be a guessing game

Without an HR department to lean on, you’re left comparing deductibles, networks, and metal tiers on your own — and hoping you didn’t miss something that matters. We do that comparison for a living.

Tell us who needs coverage and who your doctors are, and we’ll bring back real options with the real price after any subsidy.

Coverage you buy on your own

Individual and family plans are ACA-compliant major medical coverage you buy for yourself rather than through a job. They’re sorted into metal tiers — Bronze, Silver, and Gold — that trade monthly premium against out-of-pocket costs: Bronze is the cheapest each month but has the highest deductible, Gold is the reverse. You can buy through MNsure (the only place to use a subsidy) or directly from a carrier off-exchange.

All of these plans cover the essentials — doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, preventive care, mental health — so the real differences come down to network, drug formulary, and total cost for how you actually use care.

The subsidy question is everything

Whether you qualify for a premium tax credit changes your real cost more than any other single factor — and you can only use one by enrolling through MNsure. We’re certified MNsure assisters, so we check your eligibility and handle that enrollment with you.

One important 2026 change: the enhanced federal tax credits in place since 2021 expired at the end of 2025. Subsidies didn’t vanish — the regular credit still exists for households between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level — but the amounts are smaller and the income cliff is back. That’s exactly why this is the year to recheck your own number instead of assuming last year’s applies.

Individual & family coverage, answered

At full price a Silver plan averages roughly $550 a month for an individual in 2026, ranging from about $390 at age 21 to about $1,145 at 60, and family plans typically run two to three times an individual one. Many households qualify for a premium tax credit through MNsure that brings the real cost well below that. Our cost guide breaks it down in detail.
If you qualify for a premium tax credit you generally must enroll through MNsure to use it. If you don’t qualify, an off-exchange plan sometimes offers more options. We run both so you can see the real difference before deciding.
Often, but not always — it depends on the plan’s network. Before you enroll we check whether your doctors and clinics are in-network and whether your prescriptions are on the plan’s formulary, so there are no surprises.
Open Enrollment typically runs November 1 to January 15. Outside that window, a qualifying life event — a move, marriage, a new baby, or losing job coverage — can open a Special Enrollment Period. We’ll tell you which applies to you.
Absolutely — it’s one of the most common situations we handle. We compare individual plans and check your MNsure subsidy eligibility based on your self-employment income.
