MNsure vs. buying direct: which saves you more?

You can buy an individual health plan two ways in Minnesota — through the MNsure marketplace or directly from a carrier (“off-exchange”). The coverage protections are the same, but one big thing isn’t: subsidies only exist on MNsure. Here’s how to tell which path is right for you. We’ll run both for free.

Same plans, one critical difference

People assume MNsure is always cheaper, or that buying direct means better service. Neither is true across the board. The right answer hinges mostly on one question: do you qualify for a premium tax credit?

We compare both sides for you with the real after-help price, so you’re choosing on facts, not assumptions.

It comes down to the subsidy

If you qualify for a premium tax credit, you generally have to enroll through MNsure to use it — and that subsidy usually outweighs everything else. If you don’t qualify (because your income is above the limit), buying direct is worth comparing, since some carriers offer off-exchange plans or networks you won’t find on the marketplace.

Both routes sell ACA-compliant plans with the same protections; the difference is subsidy access and, sometimes, plan selection. A broker can quote both at no cost to you.

Why checking matters more this year

The enhanced federal tax credits in place since 2021 expired on December 31, 2025. The regular premium tax credit still exists for households between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, but the amounts are smaller and people above that line no longer qualify. If your income is near the threshold, the MNsure-vs-direct math may have flipped from last year — which is exactly the kind of thing we re-check for you.

MNsure vs. direct, answered

No. MNsure is cheaper when you qualify for a premium tax credit, because that subsidy only applies to marketplace plans. If your income is above the subsidy limit, an off-exchange plan can be just as good and sometimes offers more choices. The only way to know is to compare both.
No. Premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions can only be applied to plans purchased through MNsure. If you buy off-exchange, you pay the full premium.
The core protections are identical, since both are ACA-compliant. But carriers sometimes offer certain plans or provider networks only off-exchange, so the selection can differ. We compare what’s available both ways.
It depends on your household income and size. As a rough guide, help is available between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level after the enhanced credits expired at the end of 2025. We’ll calculate your specific eligibility in a few minutes.
No. We’re paid by the carriers, and that’s built into the premium whether you use a broker or not. You pay the same price as going direct and get both options compared for you.
